Twin Peaks

The first day of my 2009-10 training program begins tomorrow with 1hr bike, :40 E2 and :20 Aerobic Endrance (low cadence/high torque, z2-3 HR).  My two big goals for the season are: 1) upgrade to Cat 3; and 2) top 10 at Age Group Triathlon Nationals.  Working backwards, this means I've scheduled a peak for the end of August and an extended peak/race period in April (Jeff Cup, Walkersville, Dolan, Ephrata).  Working with Friel as my guide, here's the plan:

Obviously during the bike build my run and swim will suffer, but I'm hoping that the increased intensity on the bike will translate into run speed like it did this year, and the swim fitness gained over the base can be maintained with half the volume.  12 solid weeks of increased focus on running and swimming should put me in a good spot to drop 9 minutes off my best olympic distance time...

Because my biggest volume week is 11.5 hours, I've decided to side with the intensity-during-base camp.  To work on my TT/Tri bike performance, I'm keeping the weekly threshold intervals, but erring on the side of caution on duration to ensure repeatibility and avoiding mid-season burnout.

I've had a lot of fun designing a training program, and am looking forward to having a structured plan with periods and everything.  This is a work in progress, I welcome suggestions and discussion as to workouts/intervals/drills/etc.
